Which Starlink Mount Do You Need?
The base supplied in the Starlink kit is designed for a dish sitting at ground level with clear sky. Plenty of installations are exactly that. Most are not — and once the dish has to go on a roof, a pole or a mast, the mount becomes the decision that determines whether the installation still works in five years.

How the recommendation is made
The logic follows the order a surveyor would use. Obstruction clearance comes first, because a beautifully executed mount in the wrong position is still the wrong installation — if a tree line is your constraint, you need height, and no roof bracket will provide it regardless of what the roof is made of.
Then whether you are willing to penetrate the building, because that rules out or rules in whole categories. Then the mounting surface: flat roofs favour ballast, metal roofs need clamp hardware rather than fasteners through the panel, and pitched roofs need fixing into structure with the dish clear of any path where snow sheds.
What the tool cannot do is tell you whether a specific position actually clears the satellite arc. That is a measurement, not a calculation — a spot that looks completely open from the ground can still be clipped by something to the north, and the symptom is brief repeated dropouts rather than an obvious failure. Everything else can be reasoned about in advance; that part cannot.
