Cradlepoint or Peplink: Choosing a Cellular Router

The core difference: failover versus bonding
This distinction matters more than any specification comparison. Cradlepoint's design centre is managed cellular connectivity, most often as automatic failover behind a primary wired circuit. When the circuit drops, the router switches to cellular within seconds. It works well and it is the right model for a large share of business sites.
Peplink's distinguishing capability is SpeedFusion, which bonds several connections into one logical link. When a member link fails, the session continues on the remaining ones — no reconnection, no change of public IP address, no dropped call.
The practical consequence: with failover, an active video call drops and has to be redialled, because the address changes. With bonding, it does not. If a brief interruption is acceptable, failover is simpler and usually cheaper. If a dropped session is itself the problem you are solving, bonding is the only thing that addresses it.
Where Cradlepoint fits best
Cradlepoint is strong where you are managing many sites and want them to behave identically. NetCloud is a mature platform for fleet configuration, firmware management, alerting and remote troubleshooting, and at scale that consistency is worth a great deal.
It is also the natural choice for in-vehicle deployments — the R-Series is purpose-built for it — and for branch sites where the requirement is simply that cellular takes over cleanly when the wired circuit fails.

Where Peplink fits best
Peplink is stronger wherever several diverse connections need to be used at once rather than one at a time. In rural Alberta the common case is a site with Starlink and a cellular connection: Starlink brings throughput but has brief obstruction and handover interruptions, cellular is steadier but capacity varies. Bonded together, they produce something appreciably more reliable than either.
It is also the answer for operations that cannot tolerate a session reset — live video, remote monitoring, telehealth — and for mobile deployments crossing coverage gaps, where bonding across two carriers means the gaps rarely coincide.

What bonding actually costs
Bonding is not free, and it is worth being clear about that. SpeedFusion needs an endpoint on the far side to reassemble traffic — either a Peplink device you own at another location, or a hosted subscription. That is an ongoing cost on top of the hardware.
It also does not simply add your connections together. Aggregate throughput across multiple simultaneous transfers approaches the sum, but a single transfer benefits less: bonding adds overhead, and the tunnel is bounded by the router's encryption throughput and by the slowest member's latency. The honest expectation is much better resilience and substantially better aggregate capacity — not clean arithmetic.
Where load balancing across multiple WANs is sufficient, Peplink does that with no endpoint and no subscription, which is often all a site actually needs.
What matters more than either choice
In our experience the router brand is rarely the limiting factor. Antenna installation is. A capable router in a metal cabinet with stock paddle antennas will be comfortably outperformed by a modest one fed by a correctly sited external antenna, and the gap is frequently several times in usable throughput.
Carrier selection matters similarly. Coverage maps are modelled rather than measured, and real performance varies substantially between locations a few kilometres apart. Measuring at the actual site before committing to a carrier is worth more than any specification comparison between the two manufacturers.
