Calgary installations face a wind problem that Edmonton installations largely do not. Chinooks arrive several times each winter and bring sustained winds with gusts well beyond what a standard dish base is designed to hold, along with temperature swings of twenty degrees or more within hours. A mount that is adequate in a sheltered Edmonton yard can work loose on an exposed slope west of the city within a single season.

We specify mounting for Calgary sites accordingly: heavier hardware, structural fixing rather than surface fastening, and positions chosen with prevailing wind in mind as well as sightlines. On acreages west toward Bragg Creek, Priddis and Springbank, that frequently means a braced pole mount clear of the building instead of a roof mount that would sit in an accelerated wind path.

The foothills also complicate the obstruction survey in a way flat prairie does not. Rising terrain to the west can block a portion of the satellite arc even where no tree or building is in the way, and the effect is invisible from the ground. Surveying against the actual arc rather than looking for open sky is what separates a Calgary-area installation that holds up from one that reads a good speed test and still drops calls.
